Couple Vacations With Borrowed Dog
My littlest sister made a mistake and so had a dog she couldn’t keep. She lived near Nanaimo and finding a proper owner for her 4 month old pup was difficult. Meantime, Dani wanted to go to Vancouver Island and visit the communities on the northern shore. And so it came about that we went to the island to take the dog from Amy, and make it into a mini-vacation. Win-win. We picked up the dog, FFS Farley, from Amy late in the morning and spent a couple of days driving along the coast all the way to Port Hardy. Dani surprised me with her willingness to dig-up and carry icky sea beasts and bring them into the car where I’d be frantically trying to keep them out of the heating vents and from hiding under the seats. We didn’t keep any of them, but Dani brought home a large collection of pretty, round stones. At first, Dani was afraid of Farley and would run backwards, waving her arms and squealing, which of course was an invitation to chase her and play. After two days, though, she had learned to manage the dog much better, and grew to like him. He’s smart and a good dog. On the way home, we visited with Norman for an hour, which gave him more opportunity to tell me all about how to raise and train dogs. Farley went to a family in Alberta after just one night in our home. Sometimes I think I want a dog, again. I miss the ones I’ve had over the decades, but for all the happiness and enhanced longevity they bring, there is a heafty price in proper care and training. Besides, our house isn’t quite suited to rapidly dragging a dry-heaving dog to the back yard for the full-vomit.
