2020
Imprisoned by COVID-19!
The virus began its journey with stealth and
purpose: infect the world. From the wet bowels
of Wuhan to the Leaning Tower in Pisa, to the
Great White North, COVID-19 rode the
whining train named “But My Freedom” to
spread itself among hoaxers and believers
alike.
For us, it meant solitude in a home that felt
like a warehouse. First, we sent Dani’s family
from our suite, back to China in October 2019.
Then, by January, we were huddled behind
boxes of toilet paper and pasta. Our freezers
were full. We had a closet full of paper towels
and Kleenex. We stocked up on rice, flour,
sugar and more rice until there was enough to
ensure survival for several years for the three of
us.
Dani predicted the rush on the stores. Her
experience with impending shortages in China
drove her to get shopping before
Chilliwackians could
consider panic. Under
her direction, we
rarely left home and
when we did, we
wore our masks. She
wore two. Rubbing
alcohol became a key
cleaning agent, and
conversations with
neighbors required a
much higher volume
and a fence.
Dani spent the year railing against the evil
Chinese government, assured by social media
that the ‘Wuhan Sick’ could have been
restrained had Xi chosen to tell the truth.
Regardless of our beliefs about what might
have been and who was at fault, we were
united in our response. . . until 2021 arrived.
