At Home
These photos are from all through the year. The fruit on the hawthorns: when Dani shoved little sticks in the ground four years ago, I thought nothing would come of it. She was right: the sticks became trees. The fruit, like the plums, finally appeared, this year. A visiting arborist was fascinated with them and said he had no idea what they were. He took pictures after I suggested they are Asian or Siberian Hawthorne. Dani prepared the fruit for eating. We had a fire near our house. We were in the car and far away when it started. When we saw the smoke, we knew it was near our house, and we were a little worried through the drive home. The fire destroyed a very large building. We learned later that it was, of course, a meth lab. This photo is taken from our bedroom window. (The background photo was taken at Johnston Canyon, so technically not ‘at home’.)
Volunteer grapes in our front yard took-over the planter, but everyone wanted some. Guests snacked on them and passers-by detoured to take a handful. Dani, happy in her garden.
One of the greatest joys of this year has been playing cards with my family on my deck. And here’s Mimi, rarely photographed.
